As a continuation of Menntamorgn earlier in the year, which was entitled "Recruitment and Generation Z", Erla Ósk Ásgeirsdóttir, manager of sustainability and culture at Síman, was invited to the micro-program "In a nutshell" where she touched on the main points regarding the expectations of Generation Z (people born 1995-2012) to managers. Among other things, it was stated that this generation wants a validating workplace culture and the opportunity to create. They are results driven and entrepreneurial by nature. There are now four generations in the workplace, so it is important for managers to understand how they can lead a diverse and multigenerational team.
Good reception and clear instructions are important
Erla Ósk also touched on the challenges, as many from this generation do not have much experience of the labor market before they start work and therefore do not necessarily have a clear picture of workplaces and the nature of work. Then it is the manager's role to have everything on the table and explain well to the newcomer the nature of the job, the work environment, working hours, expectations, and also the positive and negative aspects of the job.
Good reception, support and guidance are essential at the beginning of the job, the first day on the job must be a good experience and managers must have planned a welcome plan, ongoing support and feedback for the first weeks and preferably the first three months of the job. It is also important for all generations to have the opportunity for professional development and to grow in their work.
